BirdMan’s Journey

“BirdMan” is an imaginary being who is half human and half bird. BirdMan is an imperfect being, both as a human and as a bird, who deviates from so-called ‘normality’. The world in which S/he lives is a vast desert surrounded by an infinite wall of mirrors. BirdMan can only become complete by reflecting the other half in the mirrors. But that perfection is both virtual and real. BirdMan is a monk who travels through the green meadows beyond the wall of mirrors. One of BirdMan’s eyes is a human eye, the other a bird’s eye. What world does S/he see? How does this hybrid perception trigger feelings in us?

Blind and Mute

The artwork Blind & Mute 23-24 was exhibited in a historic exhibition commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Korean Arts Council and the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Arko Art Center. This piece is also influenced by the Korean Modern and Contemporary History series by a painter from the People’s Art movement, which was exhibited at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in the 1990s during my growth as an artist in my 20s and 30s. It draws significant inspiration from the exploration of historical events, emotions, and memories, as well as experiences in the field, all of which deeply influenced and were reinterpreted in this work.

This piece is considered a video work that reflects deeply on human suffering and shares the spirit of the times, as it offers a social reflection on Korea’s past, present, and future—marked by conflict, confrontation, and anger. It serves as a kind of homage to the era.

The work explores the relationship between individuals and society, portraying people who, while capable of hearing and speaking, are blind to the world, or those who can see the present but cannot speak or hear, as well as the unstable and fluid nature of society. Additionally, through artistic expression, the piece raises questions about human connection, resilience, and the limitless potential of human expression beyond sight and sound.

The ultimate goal of this work is to recognize and honor the resilience and beauty of individuals who live with sensory challenges, delivering the depth of expression beyond words to the audience and expanding the realm of empathy with those who navigate the world differently. It is a powerful performance aiming to convey this message.

Apartments, which have become Korea’s representative residential space, are not simply houses, but have become an inevitable apex of economic and cultural desires. Focusing on the mountain behind the apartment complex, it questions the house again through neighbors as others and the outskirts abandoned in the development process.
