The informational over-saturation of modern society and the rise in numbers of immediate tasks that every individual and the society as a whole are dealing with determine the direction of an identity erasure, an identification with the group, the mass. It is happening not only in the physical and spiritual sense but also in the informational one. The question is where the place of personality in this field is – the desire to be simultaneously a part of it, and without breaking into pieces, to be a comprehensive whole.

Dance Artem Ignatiev. Music Moontrip “New Composers.”

“For me the process of working together with a choreographer or a dancer is very important. When I feel some in his/her movements I try develop this later by editing. Usually I choose the location, shoot, then edit myself. The state of my images in self-completion and concentration and I try to transmit this through contemporary electronic music. Deformation is a play with a moving form, different emotions felt by a human being towards oneself, a kind of a dialog with self-rendered by the means of plastique”.

Video was screened at the “Media Forum”, 30th Moscow International Film Festival, Moscow, 2008

A flanking formation of mirror obelisk sculptures, installed on the Bonneville Land Speedway, on the great salt flats (where the Land Speed record was held), explode in a seductive, five hundred foot plus pyrotechnic fire ball. For a moment the obelisks line in harmony with the horizon line before then are obliterated into Hollywood fantasy, dialing into the present the decline of the American Empire, complicit in its history of manifest destiny with the resulting genocide of the Native American people. Blow Awaypremiered within the solo exhibition River to Infinity — the Vanishing Points, at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.

All what is occurring on the screen thanks to a combination of specific minimalist transformation and metamorphosis of forms, to the monotonous accompanying musical rhythm, and binary mechanistic operations, looks like something between the schematic depiction of a certain technological process of production and a simple computer model of a biological process.

Lenin stated that he could not listen to Beethoven’s sonata because if he did he would never finish the revolution. In Frant’s Fur die Stadt, hungry foot soldiers fight in a videotaped dance for survival to “Moonlight Sonata“…

FUR DIE STADT (for the city) Pigeons foraging in cold snow of St Petersburg this past winter migrate all the way to New York for spring. Anna Frants’ multimedia installations of Russian city street pigeons scavenging for food have landed on both sides of the East River. Undeterred by the bustling public street around them, Frants video/sound projections of feathered city inhabitants go about their business in the front window of Dam Stuhltrager Gallery in Brooklyn at the Chelsea Art Museum in Manhattan.

Connecting life as an artist in Russia and in America, Frants’ video is set in a frozen, harsh and unforgiving setting where occupants are filmed amidst routine of working hard to find and claim their daily bread. Among the crowd, one bird has notably different movements and it becomes clear he/she is sick or injured. Set to Beethoven’s Sonata, the impeded pigeon is the weakest in the bunch but nonetheless uniquely different, and thus rises as the star.

Despair

…in “Despair” the situation becomes more complex in the shock between the human being and nature. We see in the inhospitable environment of a frozen landscape, completely white, bodies that move and try, in a weird choreography, to be adjusted to nature generating extremely well composed images in the formal direction, emphasized for the quality of the photograph in black and white. In the apparent calm of the frozen forest the disorder approaches with the arrival of the human group and their fine twigs as an impossible disguise.In the almost empty landscape they dislocate through the space, sometimes between thin trees that are intercalated with images of the forest, in different plans and compositions, almost without any movement. The suspense of the track does not correspond to the movements and to the actions that we see in the image, generating much uneasiness since everything seems to oscillate between drama and almost the comedy. The ways to articulate the supposed narrative, the tensions of the edition and the track form a multiple set that points out with respect to one total opening in the directions of the image.

How to disguise yourself in the middle of the nature, how to survive? And the crows? Do they fly or only hide us from the momentaneous possibility of being able to fly higher, to escape, to disappear in the middle of the immense sky? There is a strange ambiguity in the images, perhaps a trace that approaches the works of Galina Myznikova & Sergey Provorov of the vanguards.

The video is based on a text about Roman mythology, but the names can be replaced with the heroes from any contemporary religion. This description of a cult taken out of context can also refers to modern ideological structures. The announcer reads the text with bland intonation, giving identical weight to information on death, Chinese recipes, or God. Meaning is reduced to idle appearance. Vast landscapes shot from an airplane alternate with close-ups of the plane wing: are we reclaiming divine power or reaffirming terrestrial frailty? What is modern religion when anybody can view the Earth from Olympus’s godly heights?
