/S)CONFINAMENTO – first chapter / hic sunt leones

Networked digital performance for live webcam & synth

The Italian *piazzas* are framed by a webcam system that broadcasts online the flow of their chaotic life. A cold, indifferent look, in the sun or in the rain, which does not change in the midst of changes. Those squares are now deserted, while life in quarantine is hidden invisibly inside the houses, inside the silent buildings that harmoniously surround them. The webcams today collect the testimony of a surreal event. All the life, once feverish, becomes now a fleeting and ephemeral circumstance: the squares are manned by police vans, enlivened here and there, by the flight of a seagull, by a flag in the wind, by a runner’s bicycle, by a masked couple walking a dog. In the silent void, these short passing lives, these lonely adventures of the confined city, are narrative elements of a dystopian story, which I spy and pursue avidly as if I were at the window of one of those buildings. Through motion tracking technology, I steal the webcam signal and feed it to a software that I created for this project, which records and tracks visually the movement of people, vehicles, objects, and animals, transforming the data flow in a concert for synthesizer: the smallest movement produces a sound, a modulation, a graphic visualization, a digital effect. Finally, I return everything to the network, through live streaming on Facebook, in a creative ring of manipulations and interpretations in real-time – an open semantic loop that ideally gives a voice to the mute explorers of the locked city.

Dark Tale

Dark tale is a performative action which is magical and mundane at the same time, a fictional situation of presence for two performers. The basis is the study of the shadow as a concept — a category of an unpleasant and invisible to the eye condition. Starting with an associative map, visual images, through analyzing your shadow qualities, carefully hidden from the society, the authors of the project bring everything they have developed into the movement score, thus redefining the characteristics initially negatively perceived, and endowing them with humanity, allowing their existence, revealing their variability and presentation to the outside. Within the project, the shadow is defined as an artistic image of the invisible but felt; it is characterized by such features as implicit manifestation, specificity, essence. It is more of the content than the form: a complex energetic category that can set the direction of movement.

Unsupportedness

The philologist Valentin Nepomniachtchi believes that “unsupportedness” is a lack of independence, a detachment from roots, despite being grounded in nature. This uneven, raw feeling, which arose during the first walk on the ice of Lake Baikal, is the subject of the video. It relates to the comparison of a person as a second nature with nature as a mother, overwhelming with its scale, power, and wildness. It leads to the realization of oneself as a speck of dust, a brief moment in time, an excess or even a mistake. It is an attempt at positioning: from mimicry and witnessing to the search for meaning in this shared journey.

Vade Ultra

“Vade Ultra” is a film that explores perspectives on filming practices, whether horizontal or vertical. The latter method is suggested as a predominantly popular form of creative cinema. Cultural phenomena can redefine images, which may carry benevolent or belligerent connotations. We navigate through acts and darkness, groping in the shadows as we attempt to re-establish ourselves by reinterpreting icons and cultural production modes. Whether the cinema is presented vertically or horizontally is of little importance. What truly matters is the reinvention of something that can be deemed new, which requires detoxifying ourselves from our own behaviors. The creative process is intertwined with both mistakes and successes. Everything is uncertain, transient, and risky. Iconoclasts and other formalisms often remain ambiguous. An Indigenous Santa Maria serves as a guerrilla invention, resisting the oppressive governmental regime. The women in “Vade Ultra” poetically oscillate between nihilism and hopelessness, where the camera serves as their weapon, creating an imaginary world that includes both horizontalists and verticalists, amidst formalism and iconoclasm.

Originally conceived as a triptych, this version is presented as a single channel film.

Andromeda – The Girl Who Smoked Soap

Andromeda is a performance film that plays with texts and iconography in a postmodern manner. A combination of texts written by author CarlosMagno Rodríguez and his co-authors Giselle Werneck, Lindbergh Fernandez, interspersed with quotes from Lucien Ducasse’s Isidora (Fragments from the Songs of Maldoror) combined with biblical quotations and lengthy discussions on pollution, etc. Read out by a character with a megaphone, they are no longer outrageous, transgressive or liberating, just twisted literature of enchantment, with no morals. The characters pose for an iconographic composition close to the Christian and Renaissance traditions, a kind of imagined “Last Supper”.

Andromeda is a cinematographic reality, created for questioning disparate, paradoxical iconographic models, criticizing modern society as if numb and frozen in front of the All-Seeing Eye-the camera’s eye. This also applies to music, such as the accordion music “Kanonen’s Song” and “The Ballad of a Soldier’s Wife” by Kurt Keil (co-author of Bertolt Brecht).

The Value of the Present Moment

With The Value of the Present Moment, the internationally active media artist Marc Lee (b.1969, CH) connects the spiritual moment of the present with the form of media in real-time. This relates to the hippie movement of the 1960s, in which meditation was practised as a path to self-knowledge.

Current media developments on the Internet celebrate real-time as the promise of an eternal now and an apparent spatial accessibility. The media phenomenon of the temporal modus in real-time demands unlimited contemporaneity. The media-based now – the process of the immediate transfer of information and the prompt exchange of image, sound and text – can, in this context, be brought into association with improving efficiency, user optimisation and the illusion of transparency. Marc Lee contrasts this with a spiritual idea of the now. In various spiritual teachings, a conscious ‘living in the present moment’ is described as a condition of knowledge and enlightenment, transcending both space and time. The hippie movement of the 1960s had a particular affinity for meditation, which promised salvation through being in the now. Lee considers real-time images to be an unfiltered reproduction of reality. In his work, thus, it is less the real-time transmission and much more the real-time mode that is put in context with the spiritual ideas of the hippie movement, which championed an anti-authoritarian and anti-hierarchical world and world orders. On the day that it went online, there was a post hippie performance, during which the webcam switched between the persons who were present and transmitted the images to the website of www.collective-view.ch. During the following weeks, the webcam was suspended upside down in the trees above the performance location, and traces of the performance were still visible. During this time further performances took place, spontaneously and unpredictably.

Radio Egg is a musical and poetic attempt by the authors to deeply comprehend, accurately and concisely express the large-scale constructions of modern human life.
The works are performed by the soloist Alexei Kokhanov, accompanied by a symphony orchestra. Konstantin Marchevsky and Alexandra Pyatkova take part in the recording of the vocal parts.
