Monitoring the rotation on the earth on the sofa

In a semi-dark room there are packed and unwanted items lying around: wrapped chairs, sofas, household items. This abandoned room has been turned into storage. A video is projected on the wall in front of the sofa, showing only a gobelin carpet. The landscape on the carpet presents a fairy-tale composition: distant countryside, hills, a river, an autumn forest. A deer is depicted in the foreground. It breathes of peace and tranquillity. Such carpets were very popular in the 60s–80s of the last century in St. Petersburg and other Russian cities. In the video, sunlight slowly drifts across the carpet, transforming a kitschy image into an Italian Renaissance painting due to the play of light and shadow. The video is accompanied by the sound of the Sun obtained by NASA’s spacecraft by converting electromagnetic waves into sound.

This work is about the time within us. The wrapped items inside the room are a symbolic image of our profane world, our established perceptions. The installation invites the viewer to stop and observe the “earth movement” signified by the motion of light across a fairytale landscape with a deer from their childhood and to recall their presence in outer space.

Half a Generation

This work can be presented on two separate monitors, or projections; or as a single channel composite on one monitor, or projection.

This work is an elegiac meditation on the grandiose architecture of Dubai, the laborers who built the city in “half a generation”, and its pending environmental decline — a visual iteration of the manifest destiny of global capital. Emerging as a dystopic, soulless vision of the future, notions of civil society, individual rights, and identity are subsumed in the logic of capital. The video’s structure, ‘Eve Democracy’ character and sound remix are illuminated by Jean-Luc Godard’s 1+1 (Sympathy for the Devil), with its deliberate and inherent embrace of contradiction, which enables both a fractured narrative and a meta-narrative to operate simultaneously.

Don Quixote

The work is based on a motif of the book “Don Quixote” by Miguel de Cervantes.

In this work, Don Quixote is a young man sitting before the computer. He falls in love with the image of a girl from the internet and immerses himself into the space of Windows. He fights in the virtual space with the virtual space. Eventually, he realized that this is pointless and returns to reality in order to live.

The Shukhov Tower is a masterpiece of great Russian engineer Vladimir Shukhov. It is one of the symbols of Moscow. The Shukhov Tower is in trouble now. The construction is corroded and it might be disassembled and relocated from its historical place. I have been captured this roof landscape with dominant Shukhov Tower at different time and seasons. Just as a memento.

Vocal Parallels

This video continues an artistic research on the phenomenon of the “mysterious Russian soul”, Veronica asked foreigners, who live in Russia to sing Russian songs, which they knew. A compilation of different songs: pop, soviet and folk are transformed into a new song. The video raises questions of identity, translation and understanding of the game, “native – foreign”, “we – “they”, “external – internal”.

Declaration

Music by Gaetano Donizetti, in role Elizaveta Aksagova singer from Mariinsky Theatre.

Declaration is a part of the multimedia project “Intermission”, which refers to the etalon of classical art touching upon the eternal questions: what is art, and is it alive?! Elizaveta Aksagova, a singer from the Mariinsky Theatre, in the role of the opera diva, wrings her hands to confess her love to her dying lover named Art.

The Libretto of the opera-parody by the artist goes as follows:
“Art, my love! You are so wonderful and glorious!
Oh! Art! I love you!
Why do they want to slander and smear you!?
Oh, Art, art, art! Leave it in peace!
People want beauty and splendour,
Yea, Love and Beauty forever,
Bring back love and the beauty to the people,
Oh! Genuine art!
Too many pesticides, flavour enhancers, semi-processed produce and concentrates ….
Horror!
The End will come to the sun and the earth, but art is eternal!”
