Video documentation of the process of making black bread production, its maturation, dough fermentation at one of the oldest bakeries in St. Petersburg, “Darnitsa”, which fed residents during the Siege of the city 1941–1945. As a result of gentrification, the old plant was closed in 2012 and Darnitsa has moved to a new building due and is fully computerized now. 

It consists of 3 parts: 

• Part 1 (18 min) — the processes: mixing, kneading, molding, baking and unique mechanisms in action. 
• Part 2 (5 min) — the processes of fermentation 
• and Part 3 (11 min) — Darnitsa factory: architecture & mechanisms  

“Darnitsa” is a unique factory for the production of bread, a monument of constructivist architecture. The round shape corresponded to its content. All production processes moved along a circular conveyor. Electro-mechanical machines have now been entirely replaced by computer production. 

The installation provides an opportunity to view the old process of the unique production of black bread (all its technological stages) 

This plant operated during the Siege of Leningrad and saved the lives of many people. Engineer Georgy Marsakov, in the late 1920s, developed a new type of mechanized bakery following the concept of production on the principle of a circular conveyor stage. The whole process of baking bread moved in a spiral of a circular constructivist building. Flour raised to the top was kneaded into dough, then baked in ring ovens, and the finished bread was unloaded along inclined slopes into the bakery. 

Now the Darnitsa plant has moved to a new building due to gentrification and is fully computerized. Documentary filming was made in 2012. The dynamics of the processes of fermentation and kneading of the dough, baking bread, the operation of the mechanisms of the circular conveyor is enhanced by the sound compositions of sampled magnetic tapes (one of the first ways to work with sound in electronic music) by the composer Wouter van Veldhoven.

“For me the process of working together with a choreographer or a dancer is very important. When I feel some in his/her movements I try develop this later by editing. Usually I choose the location, shoot, then edit myself. The state of my images in self-completion and concentration and I try to transmit this through contemporary electronic music. Deformation is a play with a moving form, different emotions felt by a human being towards oneself, a kind of a dialog with self-rendered by the means of plastique”.

Contemporary dance choreography translated into a domestic environment.

My films exist in the intermediate realm between dance performance and video. This is not pure dance but an attempt to create a new language – a universal one that doesn’t require translation, focused on modernity and close to human experience. The theme and exploration revolve around the problems of our time: loneliness, the acceleration of the pace of life, and the psychological splitting within an individual. The simultaneous experience of living inside and outside society is conveyed through the medium of movement and gesture.

In the videos, I relocate contemporary dance into an overtly mundane domestic setting, a communal kitchen, which is entirely atypical for this genre. In Maya Popova’s film, she “performs for the camera in the genre of contact improvisation.” She choreographs everyday actions while simultaneously projecting the inner world and personal sensations onto the screen. The acceleration and deceleration of movement during the film’s editing also play a structuring role.

In my works, the interaction between the plasticity of movement and the “cosmic” nature of electronic sound is essential. This allows me to transcend the ordinary. The absence of an auditory track in the film is also used as a method, leaving space for viewers to engage in their own rhythmic associations and creating conditions for interpretation.

The videos have been exhibited at various locations, including:

• 2006: 1st Biennale of Contemporary Art, St. Petersburg.
• 2007: Espace Croise Festival Program, Paris.
• 2009: “Inside, I Dance” Solo Exhibition at Irage Gallery, Moscow.
• 2014: “Not in Fashion” Solo Exhibition at Gislaved Kunsthalle, Sweden.

The work is made ina creative tandem with Mayya Popova who plays the lead role and performs the acrobatic solo in the bathroom. The male roles are improvised by students of the German Film Academy. The artist was interested in a performing component of the project and its transformation through editing.

“Through movement, through dance hidden meanings are communicated, the ones that are difficult to articulate by words or in a text. They are stored in the subconsciousness and may be seen and guessed at, deciphered, yet not fully… About fleeting, about feelings. About sensual. Movement turning into a visible contour of a sign. Sound making movement unreal”
