Francesca Fini, drawing from ancient mythology, creates a modernized image of the Parcae (Goddesses of Fate) and Themis (Goddess of Justice), engaging us in the process of analyzing global historical experience. A woman in front of the screen spins a red thread from 1960s television broadcasts: fragments of propaganda films, commercials, nuclear tests, and the confrontation between the two superpowers on Earth and in space. The artist encapsulates the contradictions that emerged in the world after World War II and the Cold War, the Vietnam War—marked by the struggle for civil rights and the hysteria of terror.

In Due Course In Your House is an atmospheric audiovisual poem, a parable of finding a home. The protagonists are two birds who fell from the sky and turned into people. Lost in the new world, they try to find their homeland, a place to give birth and die. On this journey they meet a hermit, a wolf and a shepherd who give them wise guidance. This film is created in response to the instability of the world shaken by wars, diseases, and natural disasters. These changes occur faster than we can adapt to them. They produce a disorienting effect and make us requestion our roots and our destination. In Due Course in Your House is a story of migration, which the author comprehends not only as movement from one country to another, but also as an inner resettlement, a relocation of thoughts and ideas.

Materials for this video were filmed in the train from St. Petersburg to Astana. In the second-class carriage on the upper side of the shelf (this is the common place you get — when you buy a second-class ticket). I spend two days in the train, and this video captures all the highlights of the trip. In this piece, as in my previous work I try to explore the boundaries of the frame and the amount of the space which I can see through the lens.

This work is also the kind of social research for me. Trains and cars are the over social spaces, very often overcrowded as you can see it here. People are forced to go into crowd, to spend time among strangers and it is often quite uncomfortable. This space is perceived differently in connection with these terms, it is like a small separate life. Perhaps this is because of the constant movement, and that travelling always has the beginning and the end. Anyway, for me it is interesting not only because of formal but because there is also some history of human life.

Second-Class Travelling1

Second-Class Travelling2

He doesn`t notice the love of a labor union activist and dies at feminist exhibition afterparty of an overdose. After 20 years, in a new perfect world of equality (of labor, nation, gender, species, etc.), he is resurrected in the Institute of human. They meet with the activist who is still loving and is about to help. But is there a place and deed for him in a new world? If only in a museum!

The film is silent and supposed to be accompanied by a live musician.

Film discovers development of Russian utopic ideas (revolution and Russian cosmism) and their possible application to modern perception of labor and gender identification. As well, in ironic way it takes a look on contemporary Russian critical art and thinkers.

Part of media project “Insects” which was exhibited at first time in Anna Nova Gallery (Russia, Saint-Petersburg)

Triumph of species.
A new media project of Maxim Svishev ‘Insects’ consists of video objects, audio installations and a three-part video projection. Once we get into the dark hall of the gallery we are surrounded by the annoying buzz; it feels disturbing in an empty space.
Incents are swarming around regal animals, which cannot resist this power. A tiny buzzing speck is not dangerous until there are thousands of them everywhere.

In society where one is surrounded by objects of consumption more than by other people we have to deal with a special kind of everyday interaction, not via communication with each other but via accumulation of material benefits. Material things are constantly praised in advertising and the media is flooded with endless sensational news, new gadgets releases and so on. They don’t leave us in peace even at night, dictating their pace, from one series to another.

Like Maugli becomes a wolf as a result of his living with predators, man becomes a functional adept of technology.

Buzzing and a tendency to cling together for being successful in life, as a rule, is typical for the invertebrate jointed-limbed animals – insects. Under the cover of signs and in denial of reality, man stuffs cotton into his ears, complaining about unceasing street noise, and does not realize that he is making this noise as well. He is, in fact, the source of noise, causing him so much discomfort.

Becoming functional and clinging to the world via gadgets and high-tech products, one loses the natural balance, the initial meaning of live and his own inner integrity, looking more and more like an annoying buzzing speck.
