In creating a video work, Angelina Voskopoulou performs a dance for the camera, also known as a screendance, and does not document it. She choreographs a piece knowing that she will re-organize and manipulate the material during the editing process combining elements such as time, space, speed and spatial composition. In addition, one incorporates the movement of the camera, as well as the composition of the frames. Even though the body in movement is the ‘seed’ and inspiration of a screendance, often the movement phrases get ‘thrown’ around, the end becomes the beginning, the body gets fragmented and layers of dancers end up superimposed on to different backgrounds, creating a new work which is sometimes far removed from the movement material that it was initially based on. The artist’s decisions are based on the rhythm and composition of the new piece, as well as on the design, contrast and the proximity to the camera. She is trying to create a visual metaphor, using a combination of both the narrative and the location. The concept of a video choreography in her films is based on her own lyrics, texts and ideas.

Noise of the City

Impressed by a visit to the Central Astronomical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences at Pulkovo and by classical soviet fantastic movies (“The Andromeda Nebula”, “Planet of the Storms”) St. Petersburg artist Alexander Antipin has decided to create a project “The Noise of the City”. The starting idea was that the Pulkovo is not only scientific and technical complex for observing stars, but also a great panoramic point from which the whole city can be seen at glance. The artist shows this place as kind of zero zone, which combines two noises. The first one is the noise of outer space, of the universe, of stars and thermal radiation. The second one is the noise of the city including the planes, cars, radio, radars, television, internet, mobile phones and people.

Media installation

The Speed of Disappearance video is a reflection on disappearance of tangible forms and their transformation into a digital stream of reality images, where colour can be transformed and adjusted until it disappears completely.

It deals with a seamless transition into a new space where virtual forms unite with real forms more and more. It deals with a speed of the change of traditional ways of transmitting and storing information, and also with a new communication among people.

It deals with time, its flow, and impossibility “to step in the same river twice” in the real world (and with getting over time barriers in a virtual one). It deals with the speed of transmission of images, freedom of the relativity of our world and its instability.

Field

Drawing herself without a mirror, a camera or any other equipment, the artist makes a play of perspectives open to her own view only, wherein the author’s personality stays “off screen”, invisible for viewers. “Field” is a variability, multiplicity. The field looks like a black hole, endless, ever expanding, but with boundaries (which only itself is aware of).

You can find a field anywhere. It is a basic concept. In the art world, we deal with models of a field – canvas or plane in a broad sense, with a screen which is a plane, too, but endued with time, with space (in music, sculpture, architecture), with text field. All these models refer us to the original which they are in a sense.

Roaming a field, we may run into a hole, then a hill, we may see a buttercup, then a rib grass. Virtually, they are all the same and they belong to the same field.

I look for a picture in the video, I try to make the picture be a photograph, drawings be a video, etc.

Space is mechanically working, meditating and waiting. It’s the aspiration for a message. Is there higher logic than just order? Is there waiting any reward after passing all levels?

A video essay based on Samuel Beckett’s Worstward Ho.This work depicts a two girls’ journey in St. Petersburg’s suburb with the purpose of deepening their interaction with Beckett’s text. Masha Kuznetsova reads fragments of verses and words from a foreign dictionary. Nadezhda Gorokhova records soundscapes: she actively does an instrumental exploration of the environment’s acoustics. In this video, she mixes video and sound. This is a poetic study of the sound of the words based on this media intervention on Kronstadt’s landscape.

The performance was created with the participation of Alexander Tsikarishvili, Nestor Engelke and Pyotr Dyakov, Anna Andrzhievskaya, the artists from Sever-7 group.
