The group “Zapasnoy Vykhod” arose in the mid-1990s as a joint project of teachers and students at the Tsarskoe Selo branch of the Saint Petersburg State Academy of Theater Art. The branch was a phenomenon, because it was the first time that a state educational institution in Russia had offered students a course in the “art of paratheatrical forms”. Essentially, this was the first school of contemporary art in the country. Yury Sobolev, a legendary figure in the Moscow art scene of the 1960s-1980s, was the initiator of the new school, and the teacher of the course.
