The project aims to focus on the contrast between physical and the digital photographic media. It explores how our relationship with images has been transformed since they became ubiquitous, volatile and temporary, and were no longer experienced as physical entities. Millions of photographs are generated every day as a means of mass communication but these photographs are disposable and almost immediately out of date, while we drown in an ocean of images.

Using animation and video postproduction enables me to develop a space-time discourse and brings the photographs back to a specific moment in the present. The aesthetic discourse centres on the physical attributes and organic nature of the support; this is why the effects of time on the degradation, disappearance and transformation of matter are articulated through metaphors, and visual and poetic games.

Audio-visual Manifesto, in which sound and animation form a complex interacting structure. In these times of globalization and armed conflicts, which concept of ‘country’ is closest to you? How do you identify with the place where you were born? Do you feel an attachment to the environment in which you grew up? What influence did it have on you? A country is not a territory but, above all, people who, despite all their differences, think alike, share a common history, function and empathize in similar ways. It is, in a direct and symbolic sense, a family bound by blood. It is people who breathe at a similar rhythm and in the same polluted air. People who face an overwhelming reality day after day, living on the run, not knowing where they are going. With a similar physiognomy and physiology, a common DNA that cannot be changed. A piece was a part of the ARTIVISM Project.

Anna Sowa

Anna Sowa is experimental composer and artist, mainly focused on exploring electronic music and fields of performing arts.

Born in 1987 in Limanowa (PL), currently resident in Basel. She graduated from the Bacewicz Academy of Music in Lodz (PL) where she had studied with Zygmunt Krauze. As part of the Erasmus+ Programme she studied composition and visualization with Dietrich Hahne at Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen (DE) in years 2014-2015. As a Chinese government scholarship recipient she was student at Shanghai Conservatory of Music (CN) in years 2017-2018. In 2021 she graduated with distinction ‘Specialised Master’s in Composition with Caspar Johannes Walter and Johannes Kreidler.

In 2021 she won, together with the association Anomalia, the 3rd edition of the Fringe competition of the Foundatione Haydn Stiftung. As part of the prize, Anna Sowa’s opera Silenzio/Silence was premiered in March 2022 as part of the Festival Oper 2022 in Bolzano.

In Due Course In Your House

In Due Course In Your House is an atmospheric audiovisual poem, a parable of finding a home. The protagonists are two birds who fell from the sky and turned into people. Lost in the new world, they try to find their homeland, a place to give birth and die. On this journey they meet a hermit, a wolf and a shepherd who give them wise guidance. This film is created in response to the instability of the world shaken by wars, diseases, and natural disasters. These changes occur faster than we can adapt to them. They produce a disorienting effect and make us requestion our roots and our destination. In Due Course in Your House is a story of migration, which the author comprehends not only as movement from one country to another, but also as an inner resettlement, a relocation of thoughts and ideas.

Winter is leaving

This is an artist’s contemplation about her roots, the land she was born on, the ethnic group she belongs to, the environment and culture in which she grew up, and which shaped her. In her performance, she recreates an ancient Slavic ritual of bidding farewell to Winter and burning a Winter effigy on a bonfire, along with old unnecessary items and remnants of the past. It represents a parting with the past, experiencing a catharsis, purification, and transitioning into a new state.

Surmatants – Mars Rising

Surmatants – Mars Rising is an elegiacally visceral response to the CV-19 pandemic, in three acts — grounded in the Sci-Fi genre and informed by Pittsburg’s Slavic immigrant labor history, and bubonic plague imagery of Bernt Notke’s Surmatans, painting (1633), of the dance macabre. Following an abstract narrative that weaves in tenants of Russian Cosmism, a transcendence is evoked through Jesse Gelaznik’s musical compositions, paired with renowned choreographer- Željko Jergan and John Harbist’s dances choreographies performed by the Tamburitzans. The narrative follows an ascent to Mars as a result of the dance, lead by a pale rider on a white horse disguised as a beguiling female Slavic dancer and accompanied by a chorus of female singers who transform into human Motanka dolls (a benevolent kind of Slavic voodoo doll — until the ribbons come off of the face). The third finds the dancers resurrected on Mars — transmitting a human resurrection on Mars from the future. Cosmism and transcendence are evoked through Jesse Gelaznik’s musical compositions, paired with dances by John Harbist and renowned choreographer Zeljko Jergan and performed by the Tamburitzans.

Flight

The heroine floats above the bed like Sleeping Beauty, her surreal and hallucinogenic dream world materializing in a lethargic sleep, transforming her into a fairytale character. The created world is a world of dreams drawn from children’s fairy tales, pop culture, as well as ideas taken from numerous wish fulfillment and visualization programs. Escapism becomes an attempt to escape from the frustration caused by perfectionism and high expectations of life, a persistent desire to merge with one’s own fantasies and mirages. The audio track reproduces a fragment from a film about Elizabeth II, whose words the heroine tries on herself: “She never worked, never washed dishes, never cooked food, never dusted… She doesn’t know the value of money.”

Video installation was produced by dedicated crew from Latvia and Irkutsk on the bank of Siberian lake Baikal. LED is a part of experimental art project SARMA. Also SARMA is in a future dance film – documentary. Filmed on the lake Baikal, art piece explores human and nature relations breaking the boundaries of spoken word. Movement and dance was the language before the word was invented. And this is the language film is speaking.
